India is one of the most attractive destinations in Asia, not only for its diverse culture but also for its growing opportunities in investment, education, and healthcare. However, in order to comply with Indian law during their stay, foreigners must understand the requirements of registering with the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) or the Foreigners Registration Office (FRO). This procedure is mandatory for many visa categories and is closely linked to the length of stay.

1. Cases where registration is mandatory

  • Student Visa, Employment Visa, Medical Visa, Missionary Visa:
If the visa duration exceeds 180 days, the foreign national must register with FRRO/FRO within 14 days of arrival.

  • Business Visa:
    Registration is compulsory if:

    • The total stay in one calendar year (January 1 – December 31) exceeds 180 days; or

    • A single continuous stay in India exceeds 180 days.

  • Other Visa Categories:
If a continuous stay exceeds 180 days, registration is also required.

  • Pakistani Citizens:
Must register with the local FRO within 24 hours of arrival, regardless of visa type or duration.

2. Cases exempted from registration

  • Children under 12 years of age.

  • Holders of OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cards.

  • Citizens of Nepal and Bhutan: exempt from both visa entry and registration requirements.

3. Key compliance notes

Foreigners must strictly follow the conditions and remarks specified on their visa, such as travel restrictions, place of residence, and validity period.

Failure to comply with registration requirements may result in:

  • Administrative penalties.

  • Difficulties in visa extensions or new visa applications.

  • Risk of deportation or entry bans.

4. Practical process

In practice, the registration process is carried out through FRRO.

Commonly required documents include:

  • Valid passport and visa.

  • Passport-size photographs.

  • Proof of residence (rental agreement, hotel confirmation, or landlord’s statement).

  • Invitation or confirmation letter from a university, hospital, or sponsoring company (depending on the visa type).
