Applying for an Indian e-visa has never been easier. However, besides preparing the required documents, there is one essential health regulation you must not overlook: the yellow fever vaccination certificate.

All travelers arriving in India from countries with yellow fever transmission must present the original International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP). Without it, you will be subject to six days of quarantine. Please note that the certificate is valid only 10 days after vaccination and remains valid for life.

Yellow Fever and Indian Government Regulations

Yellow fever is a dangerous infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes. To prevent its spread, the Government of India has imposed strict entry requirements:

  • If you are a citizen of, or have recently visited or transited through, countries with yellow fever risk, you must carry a valid Yellow Fever Vaccination Card issued in WHO format.

  • Only the original certificate is accepted. Scans, photocopies, or digital versions are not valid.

  • The certificate becomes effective 10 days after vaccination. Entering India earlier than this will still lead to quarantine.

  • Travelers without the certificate will be quarantined for six days, counted from the date of departure from the affected country or until the certificate becomes valid.

  • Medical exemptions (e.g., pregnancy, chronic illness, contraindications) do not waive the quarantine requirement.

Certificate Requirements

The certificate must follow WHO standards and include:

  • Full name, date of birth, gender, nationality, and passport number.

  • Vaccine information: disease name, batch number, and vaccination date.

  • Signature and designation of the health professional.

  • Official stamp of the vaccination center.

  • Dates written in an internationally recognized format (e.g., 23rd September 2012).

No diplomatic exemptions apply. If symptoms arise during quarantine, passengers will be monitored by the Airport Health Organization (APHO).

Where to Obtain the ICVP

Valid certificates are issued only by government-approved international vaccination centers. The certificate is recognized worldwide and remains valid for life. Travelers should receive the vaccine at least 10 days before departure.

Authorized centers usually include:

  • Travel health clinics in major cities or near international airports.

  • Public health authorities such as Ministries of Health or Centers for Disease Control.

  • Accredited hospitals and clinics authorized to administer vaccines for international travel.

  • Airport or port health offices in some countries.

Examples:

  • In the United States: CDC-authorized Yellow Fever Vaccination Clinics (listed on the CDC website).

  • In Europe: designated Travel Health Clinics or Public Health Offices.

  • In Singapore: Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) Travellers’ Health & Vaccination Clinic and MOH-approved centers.
